Interlocking stone cleaning in Toronto is three jobs, not one: clean the pavers, replace the joint sand and seal the surface. Done separately, they leave joints open between visits. Done together on the same day, they lock the pavers, stop weeds and protect the surface from the next winter. That is how our interlock crews work.
Why Does Toronto Interlock Fail So Fast?
Interlock depends on the sand in its joints. That sand transfers load between pavers and keeps water and weeds out. Toronto winters attack it from every side. Water gets into the joints, freezes, expands and pushes the sand out. Road salt leaves white efflorescence on the paver faces. Spring melt washes loose sand away. By May, many driveways in Leaside, Forest Hill and Angus Glen have half-empty joints, weeds and ant hills, and pavers that rock when you step on them.
Most DIY cleaning makes it worse. A rental pressure washer with a narrow tip blasts out what is left of the sand and gouges the paver faces. Without fresh polymeric sand and sealer right after, the surface is more exposed than before it was cleaned.
Cleaning Interlock Without Emptying the Joints
Our cleaning stage uses a rotary surface cleaner, which spins two nozzles inside a hood a fixed distance above the pavers. It cleans the face evenly, without stripes, and without driving water into the bedding sand. Edges, steps and borders get a 25-degree nozzle held at a controlled distance, and stubborn spots get a turbo tip only where the paver can take it.
Where white efflorescence is present, we apply an efflorescence neutralizer before washing. Oil and rust stains get spot treatment. The goal is a clean, uniform paver face with joints ready to accept new sand.
| Step | Rental pressure washer (DIY) | Our same-day process |
|---|---|---|
| Paver faces | Narrow tip gouges faces and leaves stripes | Rotary surface cleaner cleans evenly at a fixed distance |
| Joint sand | Blasts out what is left of the sand | Joints refilled with compacted, activated polymeric sand |
| Efflorescence and stains | Rinsed, not treated | Efflorescence neutralizer and spot treatment before washing |
| Protection afterwards | Surface more exposed than before | Sealed the same day, wet-look or natural |

Polymeric Re-Sanding
Once the pavers are dry enough, we sweep polymeric sand into every joint. Polymeric sand, from suppliers such as Techniseal, contains binders that harden when misted with water. We compact the sand into the joints, top up any low spots, blow excess off the paver faces so it does not haze, and then activate it with a fine mist.
The result is joints that stay put through rain, resist weeds and ants, and hold the pavers firmly together. It is the single most important step for interlock longevity in a freeze-thaw climate.
Sealing (Wet-Look or Natural)
Sealing protects the paver surface from staining, slows colour fade and helps the polymeric sand last. You choose the look:
| Sealer type | Finish | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Water-based penetrating sealer | Natural, matte | Homeowners who want the original look, breathable protection |
| Solvent acrylic wet-look sealer | Deepened colour, light sheen | Driveways and patios where colour pop matters |
We apply sealer with a low-pressure sprayer and back-roll where needed, rope the area off and give you cure times in writing.
When Does Interlock Need Cleaning and Resealing?
- Joint sand is low or washing out after winter
- Weeds or ants are coming up between pavers
- White efflorescence or grey film covers the surface
- Colour has faded and water no longer beads
- You are preparing to list, or you have just bought a home with tired interlock
How Much Does Interlocking Stone Cleaning Cost in Toronto?
Pricing
Full service, meaning clean, polymeric re-sand and seal, runs $3.50-$5.50 per square foot depending on condition, with a $450 minimum. A typical residential driveway or patio lands between $450 and $1,200.
- Light ($3.50/sq ft): grime and film, joints mostly intact
- Moderate ($4.50/sq ft): weeds and partial sand loss
- Heavy ($5.50/sq ft): empty joints, efflorescence, old sealer to deal with
Try our interlock cost calculator on the pricing page for a quick estimate, then get the exact number in writing per surface before any work.
Interlock vs Concrete Driveway Cleaning
If your driveway is poured concrete rather than pavers, the job is different: hot water for road salt and a surface cleaner, with optional sealing. See driveway cleaning for that service, or pressure washing for mixed properties.
Common Interlock Problems We Solve
Weeds and ants between pavers
Weeds and ant hills are a sign the joints have lost sand. Cleaning them out and replacing the sand with polymeric sand removes the space they need.
Rocking or sunken pavers
Loose pavers usually mean the joints are empty and the pavers can shift. Re-sanding tightens most areas. Pavers that have sunk because the base has settled need lifting and re-levelling, which we flag at the quote stage.
White efflorescence
Salt and minerals rising through the pavers leave a white bloom. A neutralizer before washing clears it, and sealing slows its return.
Polymeric haze
When polymeric sand is installed on damp pavers or not blown off properly, it leaves a cloudy film. We clean it off, then install new sand on dry pavers.
Peeling or yellowed old sealer
Old film-forming sealers can peel and yellow. They need stripping before a fresh coat, which falls into the heavy condition tier.
What to Expect on the Day
The crew arrives in the morning so there is time for every step. Pavers are cleaned first, then left to dry for a few hours while edges and steps are detailed. Polymeric sand goes in once the surface is dry, followed by activation with a fine mist and, once that has set, the sealer. The area is roped off and you receive cure times in writing. If rain moves in, we pause between steps rather than rushing sand or sealer onto wet pavers.
