Driveway cleaning in Toronto is mostly about road salt. Every winter, chloride soaks into concrete and comes back as white lines and haze each spring. Our 200F hot-water rig dissolves it, a rotary surface cleaner leaves an even finish, and a typical driveway is done in 1-2 hours for $150-$400.
Why Do Toronto Driveways Get Salt Stains?
Toronto uses a lot of road salt. It comes onto your driveway on tires, boots and from the plow. As snow melts, salty water soaks into the concrete’s pores. When it dries, the salt crystallizes, and minerals carried to the surface leave white efflorescence lines. Over several winters, that salt feeds freeze-thaw spalling, where the top layer of concrete flakes away.
Add oil drips from cars, tire marks, leaf tannins and sap from overhead maples, and a three-year-old driveway can look twenty years old.
What Is Included in Driveway Cleaning?
- Hot-water washing of the full driveway with a rotary surface cleaner
- Oil and rust spot treatment with degreaser
- Efflorescence treatment on heavy salt staining
- Edges, curb cut and apron rinsed and finished
- Optional add-ons: front walk, steps, garage floor and sealing

Concrete vs Asphalt vs Interlock
| Driveway type | Method | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Poured concrete | 200F hot water + rotary surface cleaner | Optional penetrating sealer |
| Asphalt | Hot water at moderate pressure | Lifts oil without loosening aggregate |
| Interlock pavers | Surface cleaner + polymeric re-sand + seal | See our interlocking stone cleaning service |
| Garage floor | Hot water + degreaser | Removes salt slush residue and oil |
When Should You Clean Your Driveway?
- Spring, after the last salting, which is when most Toronto homeowners book
- Before listing a home
- Before sealing, since sealer must go on a clean, dry surface
- After an oil leak from a vehicle
How Much Does Driveway Cleaning Cost in Toronto?
Pricing
A 1-car driveway runs $150-$250 and a 2-car driveway $250-$400, usually done in 1-2 hours. Walkways, steps, garage floors and sealing are optional extra lines on the same written quote. Interlock driveways with re-sanding and sealing run $450-$1,200. Our blog on removing road salt stains from a Toronto driveway explains the science.
Common Driveway Problems We Solve
White salt lines and efflorescence
The most common call we get every spring. Hot water dissolves the salt in the pores, and a thorough final rinse stops it from redepositing as the concrete dries.
Oil drips and stains
Fresh drips usually lift completely with degreaser and hot water. Older stains that have soaked in for years lighten a lot but may leave a faint shadow. We tell you which to expect before starting.
Tire marks at the garage door
Hot tires leave black marks where cars turn into the garage, especially on light concrete. Degreaser and a hot-water pass take them out.
Sap, tannin and leaf stains
Driveways under maples in Rosedale and Leaside collect sap spots and tannin outlines from wet leaves. Both respond to a pre-treatment and hot water.
Rust from fertilizer and metal
Granular fertilizer and patio furniture leave orange rust spots. These need a specific rust treatment, quoted as an add-on.
Early spalling
If the surface is already flaking, washing will not repair it, but removing the salt slows the damage and makes sealing possible. We point out spalled areas so you can plan repairs.
Should You Seal Your Concrete Driveway?
Sealing is optional but worth it for most Toronto driveways. A penetrating silane or siloxane sealer soaks into clean, dry concrete and reduces how much salty water can get in next winter. It does not change the look much and does not make the surface slippery. Film-forming acrylic sealers add sheen but wear faster under car tires. We apply sealer the same day if the concrete dries in time, or schedule a short follow-up visit.
How to Prepare for Your Driveway Clean
- Move cars out of the driveway and garage apron.
- Clear bins, planters and bikes from the edges.
- Make sure we can reach an outdoor tap.
- Let us know about any drains, sump outlets or soft landscaping at the edges.
DIY Driveway Washing vs Professional Cleaning
| DIY with a rental machine | Our driveway service | |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Cold only | 200F hot water |
| Set road salt | Fades, then returns as it dries | Dissolved and flushed out |
| Oil stains | Mostly unchanged | Pre-treated and lifted |
| Finish | Wand stripes are common | Even rotary surface cleaner finish |
| Risk | Etching with narrow tips | Controlled height and pressure |
| Time | Half a day or more | 1-2 hours |
Renting a machine for a day often costs a third of a professional 1-car clean, but it rarely removes set salt and it is the main cause of striped driveways. If your concrete is already showing spalling, aggressive DIY washing can make the flaking worse.
